Frequently
Asked Questions
What
are the rules on distance from land if a
home owner wants to place a no-wake
buoy?
The Division of Parks has a Rule (1501:47-3-14) "No Wake Zones"
- stating that a person cannot operate a vessel within or through a danger zone
or shore zone or an area marked as "No Wake" at anytime at a speed that
produces a wake. A wake is defined as a track left by a watercraft in the water
causing waves that may cause discomfort, injury, or damage to persons, watercraft
or property. The shore zone for Indian Lake is a uniform width of 300 feet lying
parallel with and contiguous to the shoreline. There are a few state parks, that
due to size, the shore zone is 100', such as Lake Loramie or Delaware Lake.
Who
do you report aerators to? The section around "Fantasy Island" is
open far beyond their docks and extremely dangerous. Snowmobile
operators
attempt to pass this area to make it to McDonalds. Early
Saturday morning,
a snowmobile went into the lake.
At this time we can
only continue to post messages to waterfront property owners about the hazardous
conditions they are creating if the aerator is not limited to their own dock areas.
Aerators should be on timers and not run continuously. Hopefully, the word will
get out!
One question that comes up often is how deep is the
lake? Depth ranges from 3' to 15' with the average
between 6' and 8'. The deepest part of the lake is on the west bank between Lakeview
Harbor and Old Field Beach. It is 12- 15' deep. There is another 15' deep area
in the cove on the south side of Pew Island.
The depth of the lake by the
spillway is 4' according to the Parks Department. The spillway is located off
St. Rt. 366 on the south side of the lake.
How much
shore line/ waterfront is on Indian lake?
There are 29
miles of original shoreline. There have been a few new channels built in the past
3 years which would add to the miles.
How
does the State Park Boat Dock Lottery work?
Each year in March, the folks
with state boat docks have to re-new their application with the state park office.
Any docks that have not been re-newed are then put into a lottery and names are
drawn on April 1st.
Folks that want to register for the lottery drawing need
to do so in March of the drawing year. To register: a 3x5 card is completed at
the park office that records name, address, type of boat, length of boat and registration
number. The person completing the card must own the boat.
Sometimes
persons with docks want to switch docks. Switching can only be done on
April 1st between 8:00 AM and Noon at the Park Office. The Park Office is located
on State Route 235 North.
